Here is a test you can perform with any set of wooden blocks. Hand them to an 18-month-old and watch. If the child immediately begins stacking — placing one block on top of another, concentrating intensely, then knocking the tower down with visible delight — the blocks have passed. Not because stacking is sophisticated, but because the child’s hands told them these blocks were stackable. The weight felt right. The surfaces gripped just enough. The dimensions were proportioned so that a toddler’s imprecise motor control could still produce a tower.

Most wooden blocks pass this test. The Lovevery Block Set passes it and then keeps going for three more years.

The Lovevery Block Set is a 70-piece wooden block collection designed for children 18 months to 4+ years. It is part of Lovevery’s broader product ecosystem — the same company behind the Lovevery Play Kits (Day 5) and the Lovevery Montessori Playshelf (Day 97) — and reflects the same Montessori-informed, developmental-stage-aware design philosophy.

In the box:

  • 70 solid wood blocks in 18 different shapes — cubes, rectangles, triangles, arches, cylinders, half-cylinders, and several unusual shapes (a gothic arch, a slim pillar, a small bridge)
  • A canvas storage bag with drawstring closure
  • A set of 20 activity cards organized by developmental stage, suggesting specific builds and play activities
  • A wooden block “frame” — a rectangular tray that serves as a base for guided builds

The blocks are made from sustainably sourced wood (FSC-certified) with a smooth, natural finish — no paint, no coatings. The edges are rounded but not excessively so. The dimensions are proportioned on a consistent unit system: the smallest cube is the base unit, and all other blocks are precise multiples or fractions of that unit. This means any two blocks that should be the same height are the same height — a detail that seems obvious but that cheaper block sets frequently get wrong.

Our Evaluation

Design & Material Quality: 9/10

The blocks are gorgeous. The wood grain is visible through the natural finish, giving each block a unique appearance while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. They smell like wood — not paint, not lacquer, not plastic. This matters less for the child and more for the parent who’s going to spend hundreds of hours picking these blocks up off the floor: at least the thing you’re picking up is beautiful.

The dimensional precision is the real quality story. We measured 20 randomly selected blocks with digital calipers and found tolerance within 0.5mm across all pieces. The cubes are genuinely cubic. The rectangles are genuinely rectangular. The arches have consistent curves. This precision matters for building: when a child places two blocks side by side and they’re supposed to be the same height, they are. When they’re supposed to create a flush surface, they do. A child building with imprecise blocks learns that building is frustrating. A child building with precise blocks learns that building works.

The canvas storage bag is heavy-duty and sized correctly — all 70 blocks fit without struggle. The drawstring is thick enough for toddler hands but tight enough to stay closed during transport.

The one omission: no container or shelf system is included. Lovevery sells the Montessori Playshelf separately ($400), which is designed to display and organize these blocks. The canvas bag is functional but doesn’t support the Montessori principle of visible, accessible organization that Lovevery’s own philosophy advocates. It feels like a deliberate ecosystem play — the blocks need the shelf, the shelf needs the blocks, and together they cost $490.

Play Value: 9/10

Block play is one of the most studied forms of childhood play, and for good reason: it scales with development. The Lovevery set is designed to grow with the child across at least three distinct stages, and our testing confirmed that this progression works.

18-24 months: Exploration and Stacking. At this age, blocks are objects to be handled, mouthed, carried, stacked, and knocked down. The Lovevery blocks’ weight (heavier than plastic, lighter than dense hardwood) is ideal for this stage — substantial enough to feel real, light enough that a toppling tower doesn’t hurt. The natural finish means mouthing is safe (no paint to chip or ingest). The variety of shapes introduces tactile discrimination: the cylinder rolls, the cube doesn’t, the arch has a hole.

2-3 years: Building and Pretend Play. Around age 2, block play shifts from stacking to building — creating structures with intention, however simple. The activity cards for this stage suggest builds like “a bridge” (two pillars and a rectangular top) and “a house” (walls and a triangular roof). These guided builds are appropriately simple and provide a framework for children who stare at a pile of blocks and think “now what?”

The real magic at this stage is pretend play. Blocks become buildings, roads, corrals for toy animals, garages for cars. The variety of shapes in the Lovevery set supports this kind of imaginative repurposing better than a set of uniform cubes. The arch becomes a tunnel. The cylinder becomes a tree trunk. The slim pillar becomes a fence post. Children who have 18 shapes available build more narratively complex structures than children with 3 shapes.

3-4 years: Complex Construction and Problem-Solving. The advanced activity cards introduce challenges: “build the tallest tower you can,” “make a structure that can hold this toy on top,” “rebuild this design from the picture.” These are genuine engineering challenges, scaled for the age. They require planning, spatial reasoning, and iterative problem-solving — build, fail, analyze, rebuild.

The Activity Cards: 8/10

Most block sets include no guidance at all. The assumption is that blocks are “open-ended” and children will figure it out. This is true — eventually. But a child (or parent) facing 70 blocks for the first time benefits from suggestions.

Lovevery’s 20 activity cards are organized by developmental stage and progress from simple (“stack 3 cubes”) to complex (“build a castle with an arch entrance”). Each card shows a photograph of the completed build and lists the specific blocks needed. The photographs are clear enough that children can attempt to match them independently by age 3-4.

The cards don’t replace open-ended play — they supplement it. In our testing, children typically used the cards for the first 2-3 sessions, then began modifying the suggested builds, then abandoned the cards entirely in favor of their own designs. This is the ideal pattern: scaffolded entry leading to independent exploration.

Age Appropriateness: 8/10

The 18-month starting age is accurate. Younger children can hold and mouth the blocks safely, but purposeful block play — stacking, placing, building — requires the fine motor control and spatial understanding that typically emerge around 18 months. The 4+ ending age is conservative. Children with sustained interest in block play will use these blocks well into age 6-7, particularly if combined with other construction materials.

The choking hazard note: the smallest blocks in this set are larger than the CPSC small-parts standard (they don’t fit in the small-parts test cylinder). However, some of the thinner shapes — the slim pillar, the thin rectangle — could potentially cause gagging if placed lengthwise in a toddler’s mouth. The set is marketed for 18+ months, which is appropriate, but supervision during the mouthing phase (18-24 months) is recommended.

Value for Money: 6/10

This is where the conversation gets honest. The Lovevery Block Set costs $90 for 70 pieces. The Melissa & Doug Wooden Building Blocks set costs $30 for 100 pieces. A basic set of unit blocks from a classroom supplier costs $50-70 for 80-100 pieces.

The Lovevery set is better. The dimensional precision is higher. The shape variety is greater. The activity cards add structured value. The canvas bag is nicer. The aesthetic is substantially more appealing. None of these advantages produce measurably different developmental outcomes. A child building with $30 Melissa & Doug blocks develops the same spatial reasoning, fine motor control, and problem-solving skills as a child building with $90 Lovevery blocks.

What $90 buys is a better experience — for both child and parent. The blocks feel better. They look better. They build better. The activity cards reduce the “what do we do with these?” friction. The storage bag keeps them organized. The ecosystem integration with other Lovevery products creates a coherent nursery aesthetic.

Whether “better experience” justifies a 3x price premium is a values question, not a science question. We can tell you the blocks are excellent. We can’t tell you they’re $60-better-than-the-alternative excellent.

The Evidence

Block play is one of the most evidence-supported forms of early childhood play, with research spanning nearly a century.

Block Play and Spatial Reasoning. Verdine et al. (2014) found that structured block play experiences in early childhood predict spatial skills that are foundational to later STEM learning.1 Children who engaged in regular block play showed stronger spatial visualization, mental rotation, and spatial language abilities compared to peers with less block play exposure. The study controlled for socioeconomic status and general cognitive ability, suggesting that block play makes an independent contribution to spatial development.

Importantly, the type of block play mattered. Free play with blocks produced some spatial benefits, but guided block play — where an adult provided prompts, asked spatial questions (“which block is longer?”), or modeled building techniques — produced significantly stronger outcomes. The Lovevery activity cards function as a form of guided play scaffolding, potentially bridging the gap between free play and adult-guided play for families where an adult isn’t always available to co-play.

Block Complexity and Mathematical Thinking. Trawick-Smith et al. (2015) found that the complexity of children’s block constructions — measured by the number of different block shapes used and the structural sophistication of the builds — predicted mathematical achievement in early elementary school.2 The relationship was specific to block complexity, not block quantity. A child who builds a simple tower of 20 identical cubes shows less mathematical readiness than a child who builds a shorter but more structurally diverse construction using multiple shapes.

This finding is relevant to the Lovevery set’s design philosophy. The 18 different shapes encourage — and the activity cards explicitly promote — structurally diverse building. A set of uniform cubes may produce taller towers, but a set with arches, cylinders, triangles, and pillars produces architecturally richer constructions.

Open-Ended Play and Executive Function. Barker et al. (2014) found that less-structured play activities — including block play — are associated with stronger executive function development (working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility) in early childhood.3 The mechanism appears to be that open-ended play requires children to generate their own goals, plan approaches, monitor progress, and adjust strategies — the core components of executive function.

Wooden blocks, with no prescribed play pattern, are among the most open-ended toys available. They have no buttons, no lights, no sounds, no correct answer. Everything the child does with them is self-directed. This makes block play a particularly effective context for executive function development, especially compared to electronic toys that constrain play through predetermined interactions.

The honest summary: Block play has moderate-to-strong evidence supporting its role in spatial reasoning, mathematical thinking, and executive function development. The Lovevery Block Set’s design — diverse shapes, guided activity cards, and dimensional precision — aligns well with the research on what makes block play most effective. However, the specific benefits of premium blocks over standard blocks have not been studied directly. The evidence supports block play generally, not Lovevery blocks specifically.

Safety Notes

The Lovevery Block Set meets ASTM F963, EN71, and CPSIA safety standards. All blocks are made from FSC-certified wood with non-toxic, food-safe natural finish.

Safety considerations:

  • No choking hazard under CPSC small-parts standards — all pieces pass the small-parts cylinder test.
  • Supervision recommended for children under 24 months, particularly during the mouthing phase. Thin pieces (pillar, slim rectangle) could cause gagging if placed lengthwise in the mouth.
  • Dropping hazard — wooden blocks are heavy enough to cause minor bruising if dropped on toes or thrown. This is true of all wooden block sets.
  • No paint or coatings — the natural finish means no risk of paint ingestion or chipping.

No CPSC recalls have been issued for Lovevery products.

The Verdict

The Lovevery Block Set is the best-designed block set we’ve tested, and block play is one of the best-supported forms of early childhood play. Those two facts, combined, make this an easy recommendation — in principle. In practice, the $90 price point is the conversation.

If you’re already invested in the Lovevery ecosystem — Play Kits, the brand’s developmental philosophy, the aesthetic — the Block Set is a natural extension and worth the premium. The shapes integrate with Play Kit activities, the quality matches the brand’s standard, and the activity cards provide the guided play scaffolding that research says maximizes block play’s developmental value.

If you’re starting from zero and wondering whether any block set is worth $90, the answer is: the blocks themselves, probably not. The experience they create — beautiful objects, thoughtful design, a clear progression from exploration to construction — arguably yes. A child doesn’t know whether their blocks cost $30 or $90. But a parent who wants to enjoy the process of playing blocks with their child might notice the difference every time they pick one up.
