Magna-Tiles start at age 3. LEGO DUPLO starts at age 1.5 but requires interlocking dexterity. We tested the My First Safari set for six weeks with children ages 12 months through 4 years.

Build Quality: 8/10

The bars are thick, smooth plastic with strong enclosed magnets. The animal pieces are sturdy. Everything survives toddler handling.

Play Value: 7/10

The magnetic connection is the right amount of “magic” for toddlers — satisfying but not requiring precision. Children build simple towers and structures, attach animal pieces for narrative play, and experiment with attraction and repulsion.

Age Appropriateness: 9/10

The 1+ age range is genuinely accurate — these are designed for the youngest builders.

Value for Money: 7/10

$35 for 18 oversized pieces. The per-piece cost is high but appropriate for the oversized format.

Magnetic building develops spatial reasoning (Verdine et al., 2014).1 The oversized format makes these concepts accessible to younger children than standard magnetic tiles.
