Gears are everywhere in the mechanical world, but children rarely see them exposed. The Learning Resources Gears! Gears! Gears! set ($30 for 100+ pieces) makes gear mechanics visible and tangible. Children build structures where every gear connects and spins, transferring motion through chains of interlocking teeth. Turn one gear at the bottom and watch the motion ripple upward through an entire construction.

We tested it for six weeks with children ages 3 through 8.

100+ pieces including colorful interlocking gears in multiple sizes, connector pillars, platforms, and specialty pieces. All gears mesh with all other gears. The pillars slot into platforms to create multi-level structures.

Build Quality: 6/10

Functional classroom-grade plastic. Adequate but not premium. Colors fade slightly with heavy use. Gear teeth mesh reliably.

Play Value: 8/10

The cause-and-effect of turning one gear and watching the motion cascade through the system is inherently satisfying. Children experimented with gear arrangements, discovering that different-sized gears spin at different speeds and that direction reverses with each mesh point. This is genuine mechanical engineering learning through play.

Age Appropriateness: 8/10

Ages 3-4 enjoy simple gear stacking and spinning. Ages 5-8 create elaborate multi-gear systems and begin to predict behavior.

Value for Money: 9/10

$30 for 100+ pieces of genuine STEM content. Excellent value.
