Green Toys has built a brand on a single, powerful premise: toys made from 100% recycled plastic (specifically HDPE milk jugs) that are safe, durable, and fun. The Recycling Truck ($25) is their signature product — and it’s the rare eco-friendly product where the environmental story doesn’t come at the expense of product quality.
We tested it for six weeks with toddlers ages 1 through 3, alongside comparable toy trucks from other brands.
Product Overview
The Recycling Truck includes:
- Truck body — made from 100% recycled HDPE milk jugs
- Hinged rear door that opens for loading and dumping
- 3 sorting bins in different colors that fit inside the truck bed
- Rounded edges and chunky design sized for toddler hands
The entire product is manufactured in the USA, contains no BPA, phthalates, PVC, or external coatings, and is dishwasher-safe. The recycled material is naturally colored — no paint is applied to the truck body.
Our Evaluation
Build Quality: 9/10
The recycled HDPE is thick, smooth, and virtually indestructible. We subjected the truck to the full toddler treatment: drops, throws, steps, sandbox burial, bath submersion, and dishwasher cycling. Zero damage. The material feels slightly different from standard toy plastic — more matte, slightly warmer to touch — but is equally durable.
Play Value: 8/10
The sorting bins are the surprise hit. Toddlers spent more time filling and emptying the bins — sorting small objects by color, loading the truck, and dumping the contents — than actually driving the truck. This sorting/filling behavior is developmentally natural for the 1-3 age range and is exactly the kind of play that supports early categorization skills.
The truck also works beautifully in sandbox, water table, and bath settings. The dishwasher-safe construction means parents can clean it thoroughly after outdoor play — a genuine practical advantage.
Age Appropriateness: 9/10
The 1+ age rating is accurate. Rounded edges, large pieces, and no small parts make it safe for mouthing-age toddlers. The sorting complexity scales naturally with age.
Value for Money: 9/10
$25 for a virtually indestructible, eco-friendly truck that works indoors, outdoors, in water, and in the dishwasher. Exceptional value.
The Evidence
Sorting and Early Categorization. Sorting objects by attributes is foundational to mathematical thinking. Clements and Sarama (2014) identified sorting and classification as core early math competencies.1 The truck’s color-coded bins provide natural sorting opportunities.
Vehicle Play and Spatial Awareness. Pushing vehicles along paths develops spatial awareness and trajectory understanding. Piaget (1954) documented that children develop spatial concepts through physical manipulation of objects in space.2
The honest summary: Sorting and spatial play through vehicle manipulation are well-supported developmental domains.
Safety Notes
All pieces exceed choking hazard threshold. No external coatings, BPA, phthalates, or PVC. Meets ASTM F963 and FDA food-contact standards. No CPSC recalls.
The Verdict
The Green Toys Recycling Truck delivers on both environmental and play-value promises. The recycled construction is genuinely eco-friendly, and the play experience — particularly the sorting and filling behavior — is rich and developmentally appropriate for toddlers.
Product Rating: 8/10 — Excellent quality, play value, and environmental credentials.
Evidence Rating: Emerging — Sorting and spatial play are well-supported developmental domains.
